In-Between Time of Year

FINALLY! SPRING IS HERE!!!!

At least the snow is all gone and the grass is beginning to turn green. With Summer Solstice just around the corner, the trees are just beginning to show their buds in this part of the world. It's that in-between time of year. The wind is blowing fiercly right now, as it changes from hot to cold one more time....

It's been one of the longest, coldest hardest winters that I can remember. Maybe it just seems that way, but with the Cosmological Forces i.e. the Dark Moon phenomena, Supermoons, Earth polar shifts and more happening all at once... its taking its toll on all of us, not to mention Mother Earth.

She seems to not have the energy to bring forth new life. It's as if she just wants to go back to sleep and pull the blanket of snow over her head. I guess we all know how that is. When you don't have anything great to look forward to except more abuse, neglect and exploitation, why would you want to wake up?

We are one with Mother Earth, we are living on her body, we are part of her cycles of change. But we are also the fleas on her back that are causing her a lot of discomfort.

This Spring, seeing as I moved to a new place, I am going to make sure I take care of the tree in front of our house. The Spruce trees in this area are full of a type of little green worm that sucks the sap out of the tree and they are dying.

I talked to the City and asked how to save the trees. I got pamphlets to hand out to the neighbours. Some of then didn't even notice that their trees were dying.

We have become so disconnected to the environment, that we forget that trees are living entities and need care just like we do. We plant them in narrow shallow spaces, we plant trees that are not indigenous to this area and we wonder why they look so sick.
Now even the indigenous species are dying.
I may not be able to save them all, but I can save the one in front of my house. Already it is looking better, happier, greener than it did when we moved in.

This spring I am going forward with a renewed commitment to the land, the Ancestors and the Spirits of the Land who lived in harmony, with respect and knowing their roles as Caretakers of this beautiful world we live in.

Every little bit helps Mother and it helps me too. I feel more grounded, connected and more at home here now!
Hau!

Love your blog MaryRose.

I love Spring and I'm glad it's here too.
My parents arrived yesterday and they brought so many plants for us to grow together as a family.
I feel really blessed and such gratitude for my parents to be able to share their knowledge and skills of how to tend and care for the plants that grow with us.
It would be great to see more gardens flourishing and the same out and about in nature too.
I love working with the earth and tending to our plants and flora.

Loved the blog entry Mary Rose. I liked the statement that we are "the fleas on Mother Earth's back." Just this week we lived a story about "lice" in our Montreal community and it threw everyone into a frenzy. I couldn't help but remind everyone that not so long ago our ancestors struggled with these issues all the time... It's incredible how our Society has no tolerance for bugs and germs, and yet we continue to be the worst infection ever for the Planet. We need to return at looking at our daily living for dream messages because the Planet has never cried out dreams and visions so much....

Thanks Lili and Lisa for your input. It is good to hear other stories on how we are influenced by nature as well as how we are affecting and infecting her.

Drums and Rattles.

Lately I’ve received a few e-mails and letters from people asking questions about drums and rattles. I don’t think I’ve written a blog on this topic yet. JB wrote in his e-mail: “I often read that Drums are connected to Shamanism and often the tool of choice for Shamans. How do Shamans use drums differently than anyone else who’s in Shamanism?” I thought it was a great question. For starters, one of the reasons why a drum is an interesting tool in Shamanism is because it can mimic a heartbeat and induce a state of trance. A rapid heartbeat can trigger nervousness, excitement and even aggression. A very slow heartbeat can help in relaxation, sleep and dreaming. Every rhythm can inspire an emotion and can bring about the memory of a past experience or a parallel reality. In Shamanic circles the drum can be instrumental in healing, teaching, ceremony or ritual, expansion of consciousness as well as dreaming and journeying. Almost a decade ago I participated in a Mohawk namin

Authentic Shamanism

I brought up the topic of “authentic Shamanism” at one of my classes / circles this week. I’ve noticed especially in the last three to four years that when people speak to me about Shamanism, they often make a distinction between what they are doing and what “is out there.”  These days if you are not into Ayahuasca you are not authentically into Shamanism.  So what is “Shamanism” if it changes its appearance every decade?  Is it about altered states of consciousness through hallucinogens? Is it about ceremonies and rituals; or about soul retrieval, dreaming and healing?  Since Shamanism isn’t a Religion and doesn’t have set doctrines, then how can you anyone be clear on what makes it “authentic?” When I brought up the question this week, I received a few interesting comments.   Many of the individuals in our circles have struggled with addictions and it’s because of the Medicine Wheel teachings that their lives are full and healthy again.   The idea of defining Shamanism as a j

The Seven Clans

Wow! I can’t believe that in the last three years, I haven’t written a single blog on the topic of “the seven clans” of the Medicine Wheel. For the last two months our Montreal circle has been exploring the subject. I think it’s the first time in fifteen years that I ask my students to go out into the World and experience the clans first hand. “Look at people and see which clan they can belong to; or look at behaviors and attitudes and try to connect them to one of the Clans.” We often speak of the clans as the seven faces of Creator. In Christianity or Judaism God can be angry, impatient, judgmental and destructive; but he can also be merciful, compassionate, forgiving and loving. The Medicine Wheel may not personalize Creator in the same way many Religions do, yet in many ways it accomplishes the same end result where we can see ourselves as children of divinity. Often in non-traditional circles the seven clans are understood as archetypes. Each clan holds particular att
